Recalibrating tolerances

with one comment

Every once in a while, we have an experience that potentially recalibrates our understanding of something about ourselves.

An injury recalibrates our understanding of how much pain we can tolerate and what we can do in spite of pain.

A gut busting run recalibrates how far or how fast we’re able to run.

A period of extreme uncertainty recalibrates how much risk and uncertainty we’re able to live with and how well we cope with uncertainty.

A massive failure or the threat of one recalibrates how humbled we can be.

A huge success or the prospect of one recalibrates how much we think we can achieve if we don’t give up.

I suppose that’s what it means to discover and break one’s limits. As painful as it sounds, physically and emotionally, each is a beautiful experience well worth savouring.

Why it’s great to feel like a tourist

leave a comment »

My habits as a tourist generally involve not talking much, living on very little, walking a lot, and watching people.

On the rare occasion, I get to feel like a tourist in my home country, and it’s incredibly refreshing.

Time passes more slowly, waiting or rushing for no one, you’re so much more curious, and you notice a lot more.

In a way, that’s the upside to living in a country that changes and builds new malls every year, creating new spaces and environments in which people interact and go about their lives.

It’s easy to miss, but changes in environment can generate quite interesting changes in behaviour.

Johnny Depp on John Dillinger in Public Enemies

leave a comment »

Dillinger, just like any red-blooded American, was handed the ball and he ran with it. … You know, when you are handed the ball, you go as far as you can go… until somebody says, ‘All right, kid, you’re done. Get off the ride.’

The Beast vs. Dark Blue

leave a comment »

Just caught the first episode of Dark Blue. Looks promising, seems interesting. But nowhere as intense as The Beast. (Both undercover cop dramas, by the way.) Dylan McDermot doesn’t stand up to an embattled Patrick Swayze.

A real shame that they cancelled The Beast after its first season. Stellar performances gone unappreciated.

Amusing Saturday

leave a comment »

Not 100% yet after recovering from being sick as a dog last weekend meant climbing and mountain biking today were out. So spent an amusing Saturday playing poker in the morning, trying out lots of iPhone apps (will be making a “what’s on my iPhone list”), and setting up said personal blog from the iPhone.

Was surprised how unfussy it was to set up a new blog just using the iPhone and the wordpress iPhone app – everything from registering, picking a template, hooking up with the wp app, to the hello world post and this one. Well impressed!
